We seem to be a nation obsessed with fast fashion and the need for something new all the time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally the same and love new clothes as much as the next person, but to a certain extent I think it’s important to make clever choices when it comes to buying clothes.
I would love to have the money to buy whatever before stopping to think, but I’m a student on a limited clothes budget who needs to make their money go further for the time being! When I come to buying something I generally try and think to myself, can I wear this for more than one situation? e.g. uni, everyday, a night out, dinner/drinks etc. If the answer is I’ll only ever wear it once for a night out, I’ll try to avoid it (unless it’s the most amazing thing ever and I have to have it).
The other main factor I think about is- is this a time limited ‘of the moment’ trend? Or does it have the potential to last for at least a couple of seasons, if not into the next year? If it’s a trend that I don’t think will necessarily last e.g. the baker boy cap or the beret, then I won’t invest too much money, but if it’s a trend that I think will, then I’ll be more careful and opt for an item that I love and won’t grow tired of.
This brings me to my go to casual jacket for the Autumn/Winter season: the Puffer Jacket. Last year, these coats were really on trend, and without a doubt they’re still big for A/W 17! Last year I found the coat of my dreams, the black puffer jacket from Urban Outfitters. There were no more in stock anywhere and I had to wait for a month for it to arrive as it was on back order. Because of the time I had to wait for it I think I loved it even more when it came. Anyway, my point is, because I carefully took time to chose a jacket I loved, thought there was potential for it to still be ‘on trend’ the following year, and chose a practical colour (I mean who doesn’t love black!), it meant I’ve ended up with an on trend coat that I can wear again throughout the whole of this season as well. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still around next year so I’ve ended up with a staple piece for my wardrobe which will be around for a while! Urban Outfitters have an updated version of the one I bought last year on their website, see here.
For the rest of this outfit I chose to keep it really casual with a couple of new items I bought from the site LOTD. The online brand is relatively new and is similar to the likes of Missguided, Boohoo and Pretty Little Thing, offering on trend pieces at a really affordable price! I was really impressed with the quality of the clothes considering the price and will definitely be shopping there again. Check out their website at https://lotd.com.
I thought this open side tie detail top was really cute and was an absolute bargain at £6. It’s currently sold out on their website but they have loads of other really nice tops that could be used as an alternative, see here. I wasn’t brave enough to go braless with it (especially not in this weather!), so decided to treat myself to one of the new Calvin Klein bra’s to wear underneath, which I thought added a nice touch. I love Calvin underwear, its so comfy and lasts for ages so it’s definitely worth the money. This bra can be bought on the Urban Outfitters website here.
The culottes are also from LOTD and another bargain I was really happy with. Again, they seem to have sold out on their website (sorry guys, I genuinely only bought these clothes this week!) but you can shop another which is really similar here. I’ve seen loads of these style trousers about in similar fabrics so decided there was no point spending £40 odd when I could get them much cheaper! They’re really comfy and perfect for casual outfits and lounging around the house.
Finally I opted for one of my favourite pairs of old trainers, my Nike sb zoom Stefan Janoski’s. These are another alternative to the old school classic vans I own and I tend to alternate between the two at the moment for everyday casual outfits! They can be bought on the SCHUH website here.
So that’s it, I hope you’ve enjoyed my latest post! And remember, chose your clothes carefully to ensure you get the longest life out of them!
Until next time,
